On Tuesday, November 14th, about 35 seniors met in the church fellowship hall for our Thanksgiving lunch. Our meal consisted of: chicken pie, mashed potatoes, green beans & corn, yams, slaw, deviled eggs, pickled beets, cranberry salad and cranberry sauce and homemade rolls (made by Jean Livengood). Desserts were pumpkin pie, homemade apple pie (by Joyce Jones) and peach cobbler. Our group was entertained by “Annabelle” who showed up in all her make-up and granny attire to tell us about her boyfriend and going to the train station. Ava Foster Charles was Annabelle and everyone enjoyed the laughs she brought us. She was accompanied by her husband, Quinten and they stayed and visited with us and ate lunch with us. Robert had devotions and the blessing before we ate. Betty Graham won the door prize of a $10 Walmart gift card & candy. The seniors collected canned goods and non perisable items today to be taken to the StoreHouse for Jesus later on. We are still collecting plastic shopping bags for the StoreHouse to use when handing out items to clients. This has been a very successful project and is very appreciated by all the workers at the Storehouse. If they don’t have bags to use, they have to buy them, so this saves them $$ and gives us an easy project to work at. Our next and final meeting for 2017 will be on Monday, December 4. We will take the bus to Mrs. Hanes’ Cookie Factory in Clemmons to watch the cookies being made and shop for cookies. After we finish shopping, we will board the bus and head to the Cracker Barrel Restaurant for lunch.

-Nancy Ward, Seniors Coordinator On Monday, October 16, 2017, Eighteen Fork Seniors met at the church for
A trip to Cana & Hillsville, Virginia. We boarded the bus and Robert had prayer for us around 9:00 AM before we left. We had reservations to eat lunch at the Hungry Farmer Restaurant in Cana at 11:30. We were a little ahead of time, so Dallas pulled into the parking lot of Walmart in Mt. Airy where we shopped and visited the rest rooms for about 45 minutes. Most of the folks on the trip had been to the Hungry Farmer Restaurant before and remembered the good country food they have. It is served buffet style and everyone was able to eat all they wanted. We are already talking about going again sometime soon. Hopefully they will have some good country ham next time! After lunch, we boarded the bus and headed to Hill’s Orchard a few miles up the road. There were apple trees everywhere loaded with beautiful apples. They have a stand where they sell the apples by the pound. There were many different kinds of apples available as well as other produce. The people there were extra nice and helpful, and everyone was able to purchase the apples of their choice. We left Hill’s and went back to the Cana area where we stopped at a very large produce stand. They had all kinds of produce, candy, flowers, pumpkins, country ham, new pintos, etc. Everyone was able to buy all they wanted. After this stop, we headed back home and arrived at the church around 3:00PM. This was a fun and enjoyable trip for all who went. Those that went were: Dallas & Connie Jones (Dallas drove); Felix Rummage; Charles Wood; Gene & Nancy Ward; Ginny Cope; Bill & Jean Livengood; Wilson Merrell; Maxine Richardson; Julia & Ken Howell; Jerry & Betty Graham; Alvin Howard; Jim Bailey & Ann Younts. Our next Senior gathering will be on Tuesday, November 14th in the fellowship hall where we will celebrate Thanksgiving with a meal and entertainment. -Nancy Ward, Seniors CoordinatorOn Monday, September 18, 2017, the Fork Baptist Seniors
boarded the church bus and headed to Lexington, NC for lunch. 23 seniors, including our driver, Dallas Jones, went. We ate at Cagney’s Kitchen on Fairview Drive. They offer delicious specials every day as well as speciality sandwiches, vegetables, pastas, seafood, & salads. They also serve breakfast all day, so everyone was able to choose something good to eat! Alvin had the blessing for us and “Erin” waited on us wonderfully. There was a lot of talking, visiting and eating going on for a couple of hours. After we ate, we went back to the church, so we were only gone about 3 hours. The purpose of going out to eat somewhere this close to home was so those who have trouble riding the bus or being gone a long time, could go by car. We had 6 to do that, but the rest went on the bus. This was the largest number we have had to go on a trip this year so we may do this again later on! We missed Maretha who was in the hospital having surgery. -Nancy Ward, Seniors CoordinatorOn Monday, August 21, 2017, approximately 38 seniors gathered in the fellowship hall for a fun Luau. Most everyone wore a flowered or bright colored shirt to show their Hawaiian spirit. Leis were passed out to everyone also. Some wore true Hawaiian beads they had obtained on their own personal trip to Hawaii. The fellowship hall was decorated with pineapples, hula girls, sea shells and other Hawaiian décor. As a special surprise, Dorcas Seaford dressed in her grass skirt and entertained with an “Aloha” hula around the room! Everyone enjoyed and appreciated her sharing this special talent with us! Our other entertainment for the Luau was a band Felix Rummage plays with. There were four in the band who played and sang gospel songs. Judy Grainger was the lead singer and guitar player, but there was also a banjo player, a bass guitar player and Felix on his guitar. Everyone enjoyed their singing and playing. Seniors were given an opportunity to sign up for an appointment to have their picture taken for our upcoming directory in September before and after the meal. Robert had devotions and the blessing. Our meal consisted of: Bar-B-Que chicken, baked beans, potato salad, two kinds of slaw, a fruit tray and Hawaiian sweet rolls. Dessert was a pineapple cake made by Joyce Jones and apple dumplings with ice cream, as well as a strawberry/pineapple congealed salad. The door prize was won by Nora Smith. ($10 gift card to Chick-fil-a & cookies ) On Monday, May 15, 2017, some Fork Seniors boarded the church bus at 7:30 A.M. for a trip to Shatley Springs for breakfast. Only 12 Fork Seniors were able to go. The sign-up sheet listed 23 who planned to go, however, due to sickness and unexpected circumstances, only 12 actually went.
Shatley Springs is an old restaurant located in Crumpler, NC. They serve family style food (if you want it) and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. The food served was: country ham, sausage, bacon, eggs, gravy, potato wedges, fried apples, biscuits and homemade strawberry jelly and apple butter. It took two hours to get there, but it was worth the wait. There is a natural spring located there and they have it fixed so you can get a jug to take with you if you bring your own jug. The water is supposed to have healing powers! Wilson Merrell was the only one who brought a jug but several of us got a cup of the water to drink. On the way back home we stopped at Howard's Strawberry stand and most everyone purchased fresh strawberries and other produce. We arrived back at the church around 2:00 P.M. We all appreciated Dallas Jones for driving the bus for us. -Nancy Ward, Seniors Coordinator |
